Three-in-one Stakeholder Event on Integrated Manure Management in Africa

October 7 – 8, 2015, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The African regional centre of the Livestock and Manure Management Component (LMMC) of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s Agriculture Initiative is organising a three-in-one event. The event combines a stakeholder awareness meeting for African countries, a workshop for Ethiopian policy makers and a meeting of the LMMC advisory board.

On October 7, all participants join for plenary sessions and a field trip. These first-day activities aim to increase the awareness of African stakeholders on manure management and its benefits, and to highlight the outcome of current LMMC activities in the region. The LMMC has recently implemented two Opportunities for Practice Change (OPC) in Ethiopia and Malawi; both dealing with the training of extension workers on integrated manure management including anaerobic digestion and the use of bioslurry. The implementers will share their experiences, challenges and lessons learned with the participants. The afternoon field trip consists of visiting a household biogas plant to experience small-scale manure management practices in Oromia region, Ethiopia.

On October8 the African stakeholders will have two successive workshops. The first workshop is for all African stakeholders and aims to present the summarised outcome of a global assessment report on manure management, followed by discussions on opportunities, constraints and entry points for improved manure management in the region.

The second workshop will group Ethiopian policy makers from four ministries: Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy. The aim of this workshop will be to improve on the coherence of manure management policies between various ministries.

Meanwhile the LMMC advisory board will meet in a separate meeting.
