African policy makers call for holistic action

[Ethiopia]

Policy makers from 11 African countries gather in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to discuss legislative possibilities to stimulate and regulate national manure management practices. Becoming aware of the macro, meso and micro level benefits of proper manure management on the one hand, and the negative socio-economic and environmental impacts of manure mismanagement on the other hand, the government representatives return to their countries with clear ideas. The key message they take home is that policies and legislation regarding livestock manure need to be developed in a holistic way involving multiple ministries.

The regional stakeholder meeting, held on 7-8 October, was organized by ILRI, the regional centre for Africa of the Livestock and Manure Management Component of the CCAC. The meeting was officially opened by his Excellency, Mr. Wondimu Tekle, Minister of Water, Irrigation & Energy, of the CCAC member state Ethiopia.
