Case overview/description

Main Challenges
Knowledge sharing, Improve sustainable livestock production, Sustainable grassland management
Starting point/ Challenges

The natural highland wetlands are poor known in Argentina. There are a high biodiversity to know and protect, but also they are very importan because of their role by supporting small peasents livestocks in the Puna of Argentina.

Purpose/ Objectives addressed, Results expected

We aim to describe the vegetation biodiversity, to establish a baseline in order to provide basis for decision making for sustainable livestock production intensification

Type of Case
Research, Capacity building, Land development, Conservation
Agroecological zone
Semi-arid (75 < x < 180 LGP)
Exploring potentials / Specific Payments

National founds for research.

Land area size (km2)
the work states in two regiones: Pozuelos Lagoon (15,000 has; 1000 persons and Santa Rosa de los Pastos Grandes 50 has y 250 personas)
Sub-area

Puna steppe, highland grasslands

Land ownership
Mixed private/collective
Ownership comments

In the lagoons costs in Pozuelos Lagoons there are plots with private land titles. In Santa Rosa de los Pastos Grandes there are land community property.

Livestock system
Grazing
Livestock Type
Goats, Lamas/Alpacas, Sheep
Comment livestock systems

Flocks of minor ruminants (sheeps and goats) with daily vigilance by a woman shepherd (average 300 - 500); camelidae (llamas)  that are supervised every 3 o 4 days (50-150); many cows (4-10), donkeys (4-6).

Operating environment

free market

Comment Operating Environment

Auto consumation, local markets of meat, wool and cheese. There are some products that could be good saled in touristic centers near the main roads. Scarce pulbic policies for these kind of producers.

Participants in the case/project

Santa Rosa de los Pastos Grandes and Pozuelos Lagoons herders; Institutional organizations (University,National Institute for Agricultural Technology; National Parks)

Methods / Approaches applied to reach objectives
