Focus Area Group Meeting: Closing the Efficiency Gap

19-20 March 2014 - Paris, France

The purpose of the meeting was to:

  • advance the development of a Natural Resource Use Efficiency (NRUE) indicator matrix for the livestock sector,
  • clarify links and collaboration with pilot activities, and
  • develop a work plan for the Focus Area (FA).

The meeting was held at the International Meat Secretariat headquarters in Paris and attended by about 20 participants, representing all Global Agenda stakeholder groups.

The following items were agreed as part of the work programme.

  • Agreement to publish a ‘version 1.0’ of the matrix of NRUE indicators once indicators currently in the matrix have been further refined and the possible addition of other indicators in respect of, for example equity, economic, and animal welfare issues have been looked into. The matrix will be accompanied by an explanatory text to contextualize the matrix, explain the intended use and users, as well as the process put in place for its continuous improvement.
  • Agreement on the categorization of pilot projects according to their function and roles.
  • Agreement on the development of a concept note on NRUE modeling by the FAO, CIRAD and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.
  •  Launch of a process to identify the FA information management needs with a view to create a data portal.
  • Discussions on the management of the FA and the need for additional resources.

The next FA workshop will be hosted by CIRAD in Montpellier, France from 8 to 10 July 2014.
