BACKGROUND PAPERS FOR THE 9th MSP MEETING KANSAS

In January 2018 in Berlin the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) chose the topic “Shaping the future of livestock” for its ministerial meeting. The discussions were framed under four domains of sustainability:

  1. Food and nutrition security
  2. Livelihoods and economic growth
  3. Animal health and welfare
  4. Climate and natural resource use

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) prepared a brochure in support of the event, which provides some context for these four domains. The Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) has also adopted these domains and they will be used to guide discussions on Innovation for sustainable livestock during the 9th GASL Multi-Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) meeting.

Four background papers, one on each of the above domains of sustainability, have been prepared in advance of the MSP meeting to guide and inform the policy discussions. The papers have been written by teams of eminent scientists specialized in each of those fields and have already been through a peer-review process.

Registered workshop participants and other interested parties was offered the opportunity to read the papers in advance of the MSP meeting and provide written feedback to the writing teams.

All feedback was welcome but in particular with focus on Key Messages for Policy Makers that could serve as discussion points in the policy panels on: a) the role of innovation in sustainable livestock systems, and b) the role of trade in sustainable livestock systems.
